Abstract:

A study was commissioned by National Grid Property to investigate the source and possible treatment options for ammonium within groundwater at former manufactured gas plants (MGPs). The study has considered the anthropogenic production of nitrogenous compounds and how these can form ammonium at sites either: (1) from a site source; and/or (2) from an offsite (non-gasworks related source). Two case studies are presented which demonstrate the use of hydrochemistry to identify the sources of ammonium at a site in SE England and the treatment of ammonium using the SEREBAR groundwater treatment system at a site in Devon. The studies have shown that not all ammonium in groundwater on former gasworks sites is always produced by the historic manufacturing process and PRB technology offers an excellent potential solution for treating ammonium in groundwater.
