The term lady/ladies is used throughout this article to signify upper or upper middle class women for whom social class, racial, and gender identities were inseparable. Such women engaged in discourse that attributed universal qualities to all British (English) women. However, their choice of work and organisational methods reveals their heavy dependence upon gentility, and preferably nobility. Nearly 40% of the Victoria League's Council members in 1902 held aristocratic titles.
