Abstract:

Increasingly Central Government agenda is positioning the role of work and employment in sustaining and generating well-being in the adult population. Work Psychologists within the Department for Work and Pensions' Psychology Division work with job seekers and employees with health conditions and disabilities, supporting them in their efforts to secure sustainable and rewarding employment. In support of this aim, Psychology Division commissioned a training programme for Work Psychologists to develop specific skills in the fields of Ergonomics, Human factors, Work Station Design and Working Environment. This paper describes the implementation of a three-tier training strategy, including its immediate and longer-term objectives. Though it is not proposed as a prescriptive model for others to adopt, it may serve to guide others who recognise a similar need to increase their expertise in this area.
