Abstract:

The new government agenda on social inclusion encompasses supporting people with disabilities and chronic health problems in finding and retaining employment. This has provided a challenge for Work Psychologists within the Department of Work and Pensions to explore new ways of helping this customer group to maximise their opportunities within the labour market. The underlying model adopted for engaging with this customer group is described, introducing the concept of 'work solutions' as a way of increasing disabled people's beliefs in their ability to cope with job tasks. The implications for their approach to designing a 'work solutions' package are also described; in particular the need to incorporate information from many different sources, and involve all stakeholders is discussed. Finally the need for further development and refinement of the concept of a work solution is highlighted.
