Abstract:

The removal of Affirmative Action legislation came as a big shock to supporters of the legislation - and everyone who looked at the actual track record of those laws (positive for the groups involved). In this case study - part of a larger research study on four communities - Maggie Potapchuk gives us details of how one city, Seattle, decided to fight institutionalized racism in city government, even in the face of the passage of I-200, Washington State legislation abolishing Affirmative Action as a tool for hiring or purchasing. You'll see that the city passed several ordinances to circumvent the state legislation; find out what kind of diversity training the city used previously and now; and hear some of the results of this impressive initiative, Seattle's Race and Social Justice Initiative (RSJI), initiated in 1994 and reinvigorated by Mayor Greg Nickels in the mid-2000s.
