Abstract:

The airborne sound field inside a small enclosure, densely packed with appliances is complex in nature and difficult to describe in a deterministic way, particularly if the wave length is in the same order of magnitude as the size of the enclosure. Thereby the contained parts can act as sources and/or obstacles. For describing the sound field different probabilistic approaches are suggested and investigated modelling either the installations or the free fluid space. In the first approach a probability density distribution is assumed including the number and size of the objects installed. Depending on the wavenumber, the main physical effects of the scatterers and their probability distribution are combined to get a simplified description of the field. In a second approach the free fluid space is modelled as set of coupled one dimensional wave guides. The results are discussed together with the standard deviation and compared with FEM model results.
