Measurements of Local Volume Displacement Using a Piezoelectric Array

This paper presents a general method for sensing the local volume displacement by means of an PVDF array for vibrating beams. An array of rectangular PVDF patches attached on the surface of the beam is used as the sensor. The output signals of the PVDF patches are multiplied by appropriate weights so that the weighted combinations of the outputs directly lead to the local volume displacements of the beam. Numerical simulation results show that the weight of every PVDF patch sensor can be tuned independent of the external excitation. Experimental results are also presented to show the feasibility of this new of type local volume displacement sensor.
