Abstract:

A theoretical framework is proposed to calculate the contribution to the noise level of a condenser microphone originating from thermal fluctuations of the diaphragm. To this end a mechanical model for the diaphragm dynamics is introduced that allows to include contributions from several vibration modes. Determining the intensities of equilibrium fluctuations of these modes from the fluctuation-dissipation theorem of equilibrium statistical mechanics the spectral decomposition of the acoustic noise in the microphone output can be determined. The results are found to be in good agreement with experimental investigations.
