Abstract:

Sound design is currently being developed in various fields. The automotive industry is a pioneer in acoustic comfort and the concept has become a marketing issue. However since the main noise sources in a vehicle have been progressively reduced, secondary sources of noise have emerged, such as neutral gear rattle noise caused by gear teeth shocks inside the gearbox due to the effect of excitation by engine torque fluctuation (and hence engine rotational speed and acceleration irregularity). This mechanical behavior, which does not affect the functioning of the engine and is not a cause of wear, becomes a problem only when it is noticeable. In this article, two complementary aspects of how idle rattle noise is perceived will be presented. An overall study of noise, based on subjective evaluation tests has highlighted the most significant physical parameters as far as this noise perception is concerned. Bench tests were conducted reproducing the phenomenon of rattle with perfectly adjusted angular acceleration at the gearbox input shaft. These tests made it possible to observe the influence of various excitation parameters on noise. Different rattle rhythms were obtained and the influence of both the spectral composition and the temporal shape of the engine torque fluctuation at the gearbox input shaft were shown.
