Inverse Modelling of Rubber Coated Steel Plates with a Genetic Algorithm
Abstract:We present results from a study for modelling an inhomogeneous rubber coating on a steel plate in terms of an acoustically equivalent coating composed of two layers of homogeneous rubber. A water-immersed steel plate, coated on one side with an anechoic rubber, was insonified by transient pulses and estimates of the transmission and reflection coefficients of the plate as function of center frequency, incidence angle and temperature were computed. By fitting parameters of the homogeneous rubber layers to the observed coefficients with a genetic algorithm a simpler but acoustically equivalent model was sought. Even though certain possibly significant anechoic and damping effects were not modelled directly in the analysis - as for instance oscillations of the cavities or scattering from the cavities - the numerical predictions with the final model were found to be in fairly good agreement with the experimental data.
