Simulation and Measurements of Insertion Loss of Passive Silencers

The insertion loss of passive silencers is studied by means of a numerical simulation tool for coupled field problems. This simulation scheme is based on the Finite-Element-Method (FEM) and allows, besides other physical couplings, the precise and efficient calculation of mechanical and acoustic fields including their mutual couplings. Therewith, the interaction of the acoustic wave with the passive silencer can be studied and optimisation with respect to geometrical configuration and material parameters can be performed.

In this paper, the validity of the simulation models is first studied and verified by comparing measurements and simulations of the absorption coefficient of the passive silencer material. Next, the insertion loss of passive silencers is calculated for several configurations and also compared with measurements. For all test cases good agreement is observed. As an application, we investigate the problem of standing waves arising in measurement setups according to ISO regulations.
