This paper deals with the relation between coupling and damping coefficients related to surface elastic waves propagating around cylindrical targets. An analytical expression is established that gives an approximation for the coupling coefficient in relation both with damping coefficients and background phases which are introduced by the factorisation of the Scattering matrix obtained from the Resonance Scattering Theory. It is shown that the approximated relation between coupling and damping coefficients is valid for the rather large damping of surface elastic waves (the limiting value of damping coefficients is found to be equal to 1/). The phase term of coupling coefficient is shown to correspond to the resonant contribution of the background introduced by the use of the Resonance Scattering Theory.
