Abstract:

Mode coupling in acoustics has been observed in cases of acoustical propagation in wires, strips, and stratified structures. Instances of mode coupling have been detected in acoustical dispersive delay lines and theoretical treatement of mode coupling have been carried out for electromagnetic wave-guides.The phenomenon of mode coupling in a stratified structure is reported here for ultrasonic wave train in a propagation parallel to the layers of aluminium—water structure, in a frequency range of 0.8–1.1 MHz.The coupling mechanism is explained by means of the electromagnetic theory and waveform of the ultrasonic wave train transmitted through the structure is computed. Synthesized and experimental signals are in good agreement.
