Perturbative Integral Expansion Analysis of the Acousto-Optic Effect

Abstract:

The acousto-optic effect is analyzed using an iterative method on the integral form of Maxwell's wave equation. Systematic expressions of light diffraction from multiple acoustic waves including higher-order effects are obtained without assuming trial coupledmode solutions. Each iteration is identified as an increasing order of acousto-optic effects in a natural way. The parabolic approximation that has been used in conventional coupled-mode theory is not assumed. The new method is applied to analyze a specific type of correlator utilizing acoustic waves and photorefractive gratings.

Zusammenfassung

Der akusto-optische Effekt wird unter Benutzung einer Iterationsmethode für die Integralform der Maxwellschen Wellengleichung untersucht. Es werden systematische Ausdrucke für die Lichtbeugung an mehrfachen Schallwellen einschließlich von Effekten höherer Ordnung erhalten, ohne versuchsweise Lösungen für die Modenkopplung annehmen zu müssen. Jede neue Iteration wird in natürlicher Weise als zunehmende Ordnung des akustooptischen Effekts bestimmt. Von der parabolischen Näherung, die in der konventionellen Theorie gekoppelter Moden verwendet wird, wird kein Gebrauch gemacht. Die neue Methode wird auf die Untersuchung eines speziellen Korrelators angewandt, bei dem Schallwellen und lichtbrechende Gitter verwendet werden.

On analyse l'effet acousto-optique par une méthode d'itération sur la forme integrate de l'équation des ondes de Maxwell. Par cette méthode il est immédiat d'obtenir les expressions de la diffraction de la lumière par des ondes acoustiques multiples, y compris pour les effets d'ordre eleve, sans qu'il soit necessaire d'utiliser les solutions de modes couplés. Chaque itération représente tout naturellement un accroissement de l'ordre des effets acousto-optiques. Il n'est pas fait usage de l'approximation parabolique que l'on utilise dans la théorie conventionnelle des modes couplés. On applique cette nouvelle méthode à l'analyse d'un corrélateur particulier utilisant des ondes acoustiques et des réseaux photoréfringents.
