We have studied the temporal evolution of the spectrum of the transverse and longitudinal formes exerted by the string on a measuring frame. The quality factor, Q, of the transverse modes possesses a pronounced maximum in the region where the ear is most sensitive: At low frequencies the viscosity of the air dominates while at high frequencies, the damping is, in contrast, a function of the metallurgical state of the string. The variation of Q with frequency is characteristic for each type of string. Different mechanisms of internal friction are discussed (viscoelasticity of the metal, dislocation movement, thermal transport) as well as the rôle of the tension. Several non-linearities were observed, particularly a coupling between certain transverse modes and the compressional wave.

Nous étudions l'évolution temporelle du spectre de la force transversale et de la force longitudinale exercées par la corde sur un bane de mesure. Le facteur de qualité Q des modes transversaux possède un maximum marqué dans la zone où l'oreille est la plus sensible; à basse fréquence la viscosité de l'air prédomine, alors qu' à haute fréquence l'amortissement est au contraire fonction de l' état métallurgique de la corde; la variation de Q en fonction de la fréquence est caractéristique de chaque type de corde. Différents mécanismes de frottement interne sont discutés (viscoélasticité du métal, mouvement des dislocations, transport thermique), ainsi que le rôle de la tension. Plusieurs nonlinéarités sont mises en évidence, notamment l'existence d'un couplage entre certains modes transversaux et l'onde de compression.

Auf einer Meßbank wurde die zeitliche Entwicklung der Quer- und der Längskraft untersucht, die von einer Saite ausgeübt wird. Die Güte der Transversalmoden hat ein ausgeprägtes Maximum in dem Bereich größter Ohrenempfindlichkeit; bei niederen Frequenzen ist die Viskosität der Luft maßgebend, während bei hohen Frequenzen die Dämpfung von dem Saitenmaterial abhängt. Die Frequenzabhängigkeit von Q ist für jede Saitenart charakteristisch. Es werden verschiedene Mechanismen der inneren Reibung diskutiert (die Viskoelastizität des Metalls, die Bewegungen von Versetzungen, die Wärmeleitung), wie auch die Rolle der Saitenspannungen. Mehrere Nichtlinearitäten treten klar zu Tage, vor allem die Existenz einer Kopplung zwischen bestimmten Transversalmoden und der Druckwelle.
