Abstract:

Thresholds of amplitude and of frequency modulation have been measured by 6 subjects at tone frequencies of 0.25, 1, and 4 kHz, using a modulation frequency of 4 Hz as a function of the level of the tones in quiet condition as well as with additional broad band or narrow band masking noise. Results indicate that thresholds of modulation remain unchanged by masking for tone levels exceeding the excitation level of the masking sound by more than 25 dB.

Zusammenfassung

Amplituden- und Frequenzmodulationsschwellen wurden von 6 Versuchspersonen für Tonfrequenzen von 0,25, 1 und 4 kHz bei der Modulationsfrequenz von 4 Hz in Abhängigkeit vom Pegel der Töne sowohl in Ruhe als auch bei gleichzeitiger Darbietung von Breitband- und von Schmalbandrauschen als Maskierer gemessen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, daß die Modulationsschwellen vom Maskierer unbeeinflußt bleiben, wenn der Pegel des Tones den vom Maskierer hervorgerufenen Erregungspegel um mehr als 25 dB überschreitet.

On a mesuré des seuils de modulation d'amplitude et de modulation de fréquence avec six sujets, pour des sons de 250 Hz, 1 kHz et 4 kHz modulés à une fréquence de 4 Hz, en fonction du niveau sonore des sons modulés, les mesures étant effectuées successivement en ambiance calme puis en présence de bruits de masquage large bande et bande étroite. Les résultants obtenus montrent que les seuils de modulation ne sont pas influencés par le masquage pourvu que le niveau des sons testés dépasse d'au moins 25 dB celui des masqueurs.
