Acoustic Features of Consonants: A Study Based on Telugu Speech Sounds

The paper presents a study on variations in the concentration of acoustic energies and duration of plosion, aspiration and friction for 27 non-nasal Telugu consonants consisting of 16 stops, 4 fricatives, 4 affricates, 2 laterals and one glide. The acoustic phonetic and prosodic parameter values are studied for different articulatory states. The effect of aspiration and voicing on these parameters have been discussed. These effects may be correlated with the underlying physiological and physical phenomena. Some particular features of the prosodic structure of the consonants studied are also briefly indicated.


Es wird eine Untersuchung zur Konzentrationsänderung akustischer Energien und zur Dauer der Plosions-, Aspirations- und Friktionsphase für 27 nicht nasale Telugu-Konsonanten vorgestellt. Die Konsonanten setzen sich zusammen aus 16 Verschlußlauten, 4 Frikativen, 4 Affrikativen, 2 Lateraten und 1 Gleitlaut. Die Werte der phonetischen und prosodisehen Parameter werden für verschiedene, artikulatorische Zustände untersucht. Ferner wird der Einfluß von Aspiration und Stimmgebung auf diese Parameter diskutiert, die mit den zugrundeliegenden physiologischen und physikalischen Phänomenen korreliert sein können. Einige spezielle Eigenschaften der prosodisehen Struktur der untersuchten Konsonanten werden ebenfalls kurz aufgezeigt.


On étudie les variations de concentration de l'énergie acoustique et les durées de plosion, d'aspiration et de friction pour 27 consonnes non nasales de la langue télugu: 16 consonnes d'arrêt, 4 fricatives, 2 latérates, 4 affricates et une glissante. On a également étudié les valeurs des parametres phonétiques et prosodiques pour différents états articulatoires. On discute des effets de l'aspiration et du voisage sur ces paramètres et on a cherché à les rattacher aux phénomènes physiques et physiologiques sous-jacents. On indique aussi brièvement quelques caractéristiques particulières de la structure prosodique des consonnes étudiées.
