On Frequency Dependent Back-Scattering of an Acoustic Wave Train in the Atmosphere

The frequency dependent scattering of acoustic waves in the atmosphere is shown to induce a non-doppler frequency shift in the scattered energy of a finite duration acoustic wave train. Transient departures from the Kolmogorov turbulence law over small wave number ranges are proposed; these departures result in acoustic angular frequency shifts of the order of several π rad s−1. It is suggested that this mechanism may be at least partially responsible for non-doppler frequency shifts previously reported by the author.

Zusammenfassung

Die frequenzabhängige Rückstreuung akustischer Wellen in der Atmosphäre bewirkt eine Nicht-Doppler-Frequenzverschiebung in der gestreuten Energie eines endlich dauernden akustischen Wellenzuges. Vorübergehende Abweichungen vom Kolmogorov-Turbulenzgesetz über kleine Wellenzahlbereiche werden vorgeschlagen; diese Abweichungen äußern sich in Verschiebungen der akustischen Kreisfrequenz in der Größenordnung von einigen π rad s−1. Es wird vermutet, daß dieser Mechanismus zumindest teilweise für die Nicht-Doppler-Frequenzverschiebung verantwortlich ist, über die der Autor vorher berichtete.

On montre que la rétrodiffusion à dépendance fréquencielle des ondes acoustiques dans l'atmosphère induit un décalage non-dopplérien de la fréquence dans l'énergie diffusée par un train d'ondes de durée finie. On attribue cet effet à des écarts transitoires à la loi de turbulence de Kolmogorov sur le domaine des petits nombres d'ondes. De tels écarts peuvent entraîner des glissements de la fréquence angulaire de l'ordre de plusieurs π rad s−1. On suggère que ce mécanisme pourrait être responsable, au moins partiellement, des glissements non-dopplériens de fréquence rapportés antérieurement par l'auteur.
