Abstract:

The ultrasonic velocity in water has been calculated by using the theory of Brownian motion and the counteracting molecular forces dependent on structure between 25 °C and 80 °C. We have determined the adiabatic compressibility of the water molecule on the basis of Schaaffs' molecular kinetic theory and studied its temperature dependence.

According to our calculations the anomalous temperature dependence of ultrasonic velocity in water can be interpreted as the temperature dependence of the adiabatic compressibility of the water molecule itself.
