The Application of the Acoustic Telescope in Architectural Acoustics

The development of a system capable of determining the spectral and spatial distribution of noise sources generated by modern jet engines, known as the acoustic telescope, has interesting applications in architectural acoustics. In this paper a microphone array and an associated data acquisition system is proposed, that is directional in three planes, and so may be used to identify sound sources within enclosures. The system will be useful in studying diffusion and the important acoustical sensation of space, which a listener usually experiences in a concert hall or auditorium. The system might also have uses in public address systems and perhaps more generally as a directional microphone in source location.


Das akustische Teleskop, ein System, das die spektrale und räumliche Verteilung von Schallquellen, insbesondere moderner Düsenflugzeuge, zu bestimmen gestattet, hat auch in der Bauakustik interessante Anwendungsmöglichkeiten. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird eine Anordnung, bestehend aus einer Mikrophonmatrix und einem zugeordneten Datenerfassungssystem vorgeschlagen, die in drei Ebenen richtungsempfindlich ist und dadurch zur Identifizierung von Schallquellen in geschlossenen Räumen verwendet werden kann. Das System kann ausgenutzt werden bei der Untersuchung der Schallstreuung und des wichtigen akustischen Raumeindrucks eines Hörers in einem Konzertsaal bzw. einem Auditorium. Anwendungen ergeben sich ebenso bei Lautsprecheranlagen und, vielleicht noch allgemeiner, als Richtmikrophon zur Ortung von Schallquellen.


Le télescope acoustique est un système capable de déterminer les distributions spectrale et spatiale des sources de bruit engendrées par les moteurs à réaction modernes. On montre ici qu'il possède également d'intéressantes applications en acoustique architecturale. Le système proposé se compose d'un réseau de microphones et d'un système d'acquisition de données. Il est directionnel dans trois plans et se prête donc à l'identification des sources acoustiques dans les enceintes. Il sera utile pour étudier la diffusion et la sensation d'espace acoustique telle qu'un auditeur l'éprouve dans un auditorium ou une salle de concert. Le système pourrait avoir aussi des applications dans les problèmes de sonorisation et plus généralement dans les problèmes de localisation exigeant des microphones directifs.
