Abstract:

The rapidly expanding ecotourism field has spawned a rich run of academic and popular publications over the past decade. Among the most recent of these is this collection of almost 200 case studies compiled by the prolific and peripatetic Ralf Buckley of Griffith University, Australia. Arranged by region, the case studies include examples of ecolodges, protected areas, tour operators, and other ecotourism-related products. Most are private sector commercial operations, but the public, community, and NGO sectors are also well represented. Overall, the coverage is well balanced both in terms of sectors and regions, allowing that Buckley has justifiably included more cases from regions where ecotourism as such is more explicitly marketed, such as Australia, sub-Saharan Africa, and the rainforest belt of Central and South America. An impressive feature of the book is the fact that the author has personally visited and ``audited'' at least one third of the selected case studies. This is cited as one of the factors that influenced the author's selection process, in addition to consultation with other ecotourism experts and scrutiny of reputable academic and other publications. The writing style makes for enjoyable and easy to follow reading.
