Abstract:
This article discusses the claim that greater market forces between schools will act to raise the quality of educational provision. First, it examines the changes that have been made within the English and Welsh educational systems over the last two decades and discusses the research evidence about the relationship between competition and quality. The evidence is found not to support the claim. Second, it considers the extreme form of free-market schooling proposed by James Tooley, and finds the proposal unacceptable. Third, it argues for a reconceptualisation of what is meant by the concept of quality in education.Language: English
