Abstract:

In this occasional series we record the views and personal experience of people who have specially contributed to the evolution of ideas in the Journal's field of interest . David Hawks is an Australian who over a crucial period played a major role in advising on Australian responses to alcohol and other drug problems within his country at state and federal level. Previously he had worked in Canada and in the UK, and for a time was a staff member of WHO Geneva.
