Abstract:The acquisition and dissemination of information is an ever-increasing problem for federal agencies engaged in research. To facilitate the publication of its geologic index maps, the U.S. Geological Survey has turned to computer-assisted techniques. The major objective of the project is the creation of a data base that has three distinct functions. The primary function is the rapid generation of geologic index maps for publication (already in production). The second is immediate accessibility to all items in the data base, and the third is provision for a management information facility.
