Abstract:

Premature ejaculation (PE) is an extremely common presentation among men complaining of sexual dysfunction. The condition has been described in various ways, including the length of time to ejaculation (latency) and voluntary ‘control’ over ejaculation. However, there remains no universally agreed definition of PE and this creates difficulties in the study of this problem. Various definitions of PE are discussed in the following review. In addition, the aetiology of the condition, including neurophysiological, psychophysiological and psychosocial causes are reviewed. The current therapeutic options such as the behavioural approach and the use of both systemic and local pharmacotherapeutic agents are also discussed below.
