Effect of Ultrasonic Treatment on the Crystallization Kinetic Parameters of BaNaB9O15 Glasses

Transparent glasses of BaNaB9O15 (BNBO) were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) carried out on the as-quenched samples confirmed their amorphous and glassy nature, respectively. Nonisothermal crystallization processes in BNBO glasses before and after ultrasonic surface treatment (UST) with suspension of BNBO particles in acetone medium have been investigated using DSC. Kinetic parameters were determined by using modified Johnson–Mehl–Avrami equations. The computed values of kinetic parameters of the samples before and after UST were compared. The values for the onset of crystallization temperature, activation energy and Avrami exponent were found to be lower for ultrasonic-treated samples. The activation energies for the nucleation and crystallization of BNBO glasses were also determined.
