Reactive Coating of Zircon on Mullite and Mullite—Alumina Substrates

Abstract:

A stable zirconia coating of 20–30 pm thickness on a mullite substrate with a different alumina/silica ratio was obtained by reactive coating of zircon. It is shown that the Al2O3/ SiO2 ratio of the mullite substrate drastically affects the morphology of the zirconia coating. The results are explained on the basis of the Al2O3–SiO2–ZrO2 phase equilibria.
