An oxidation-protective coating of C/SiC brake materials was prepared by the sol–gel method using tetraethoxysilane and triethylborate. The coating was characterized by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. The oxidation resistance was also investigated. The results indicated that a dense and homogeneous borosilicate glass coating was formed on C/SiC. At 800°C, the normal service temperature of the brake disks, the as-received borosilicate glass coating effectively protected C/SiC brake materials from oxidizing in air. Moreover, the coating showed excellent thermal shock resistance, excellent seawater corrosion resistance, and excellent self-healing ability.
