Abstract:

Summary

A 20-year-old man with a mild-to-moderate learning disability was presented to services with a history of engaging in auto-erotic practices. A multidisciplinary assessment was conducted which demonstrated that the client understood the difference between appropriate and inappropriate sexual behaviour, but his ability to transfer this knowledge to real-life situations was limited. An intervention was instigated that focused on developing a greater range of social opportunities for the client whilst simultaneously monitoring his potential to re-engage in the dangerous sexual practices. This intervention has led to an overall decrease in the frequency and severity of the behaviour that has been maintained over time.
