The title compound, NH4+·C12H15N2O3, was crystallized by slow evaporation of a liquid ammonia solution ofl-alanyl-l-phenylalanine. The crystal-packing arrangement and the hydrogen-bonding pattern are very similar to those observed for ammoniuml-isoleucyl-l-isoleucinate [Görbitz (2004). Acta Cryst. B60, 569–577], the other known ammonium salt of an amino acid or a peptide.
