Abstract:

Functioning parathyroid cyst is a rare cause of primary hyperparathyroidism. Surgeons can experience difficultly in diagnosing this condition during cervical exploration as it mimics a thyroid cyst. Preoperative localization by Sestamibi scan is limited by the volume of functioning parathyroid tissue in the cyst wall. Therefore, a high index of suspicion is required in order not to miss the abnormal parathyroid tissue. The diagnosis can be confirmed by intraoperative needle aspiration of the cyst fluid for parathyroid hormone and histological examination. A case of functioning parathyroid cyst localized by Sestamibi scan is presented.
