Abstract:

One of the problems with monitoring the oceans is that changes in circulation can take place very slowly on a human timescale – and yet have drastic results for the climate. Now a team led by Rainer Zahn of the Autonomous University of Barcelona has suggested a possible early warning of major changes in ocean circulation, in the form of localized changes in the saltiness of sea water.
