Abstract:

Three populations of the genus Panagrolaimus Fuchs, 1930 are described and contrasted from light and scanning electron microscope studies. Two populations were obtained from a sea birds nest on the island of Surtsey, Iceland, and subsequently kept in agar cultures, the third population was from Swedish arable soil. The identity of the three populations, provisionally determined as P. superbus Fuchs, 1930, P. detritophagus Fuchs, 1930 and P. rigidus (Schneider, 1866) Thorne, 1937, respectively, is discussed in the light of two different identification schemes recently proposed by Andrássy and Williams.
