Abstract:

In the large family companies of Lisbon there is a very clear distinction between family and business : business is clearly something to be taken care of by men and the family is something to be looked after by women. Based on empirical research in seven large business families in Lisbon, this article aims to analyse how the referred gender differences (which are set in a social context marked by a symbolic emphasis on male descent) are handled on a day-to-day basis, giving rise to a situation where there is complementarity between the manner in which men and women participate in the economic enterprise they share.

This argument is illustrated by analysing the processes through which the women, although they are unable to participate actively in the professional life of their companies, perform a fundamental role in maintaining the social relations within the elite social group to which they belong, thus being of decisive importance in continuing their families' economic enterprises.

No âmbito das grandes empresas familiares de Lisboa há uma distinção muito clara entre família e negócios : os negócios são, claramente, um assunto de homens e a família é um assunto de mulheres. Tendo como base um trabalho de investigação empírica realizado junto de sete grandes famílias empresariais de Lisboa, este artigo tem como objectivo analisar a forma como as referidas distinções degénero (que se impõem num contexto social caracterizado por uma ênfase simbólica marcadamente agnática) são manipuladas na agencialidade quotidiana, dando origem a uma situação de complementaridade na forma como homens emulheres participam no projecto económico que partilham.

Ilustrar-se-á este argumento com base na análise dos processos através dosquais as mulheres, apesar de arredadas de uma participação activa na vida profissional das suas empresas, desempenham um papel fundamental na manutenção das relações sociais dentro do grupo social de elite a que pertencem, adquirindo assim um peso decisivo na continuidade do projecto económico familiar.

Dans le cadre des grandes entreprises familiales de Lisbonne, il existe une distinction très claire entre famille et affaires : les affaires sont clairement du domaine des hommes et la famille est l'affaire des femmes. Basée sur un travail de recherche empirique réalisé auprès de sept grandes familles d'entrepreneurs de Lisbonne, cet article a pour objectif d'analyser la façon dont les distinctions de genre mentionnées (imposées dans un contexte social caractérisé par un fort accent symbolique mis sur la lignée mâle) s'installent au quotidien, donnant naissance à une situation de complémentarité où les hommes et les femmes participent au projet économique qu'ils partagent.

Cet argument est illustré sur la base de l'analyse des processus à travers lesquels les femmes, bien qu'écartées d'une participation active dans la vie professionnelle de leurs entreprises, jouent un rôle fondamental dans le maintien des relations sociales à l'intérieur du groupe social d'élite auquel elles appartiennent, acquérant ainsi une importance décisive dans la continuité du projet économique familial.
