Abstract:

This article examines the gender construction process among the Handa. Starting from the assumption that, in this ethnic group, the female and male initiation rituals are for attributing gender and that they assign prestige to men and women, the family and marriage are taken as the focus of interest for this analysis. The distinctions between the genders, reflected in sexuality, behaviour, body attitude, language, way of dress and hairstyle are examined throughout the socialisation process of the individuals. The emphasis is placed on the relations between men and women and on the place of the woman in the centre of the group.

Portugese
