Abstract:

In his recent work, The Myth of Dialectics, John Rosenthal has presented a forceful critique of Hegel and of Marxists sympathetic to the Hegelian legacy,' With well over a quarter of the world's population mired in a global depression, one might think that now is not the time for radical philosophers to indulge in arcane debates about the relevance of Hegelian dialectics. Nonetheless, I shall attempt to present a reading of Hegel that is both more charitable and, I believe, more accurate than Rosenthal's. At the conclusion of the paper I shall suggest that this controversy is not entirely irrelevant to the concerns of contemporary radical social theorists.
