Abstract:

Leontocaris Stebbing, 1905 is a genus of hippolytid shrimps with a distinctive major pereopod having a blade-like dactylus closing on a massive propodus, together supported by extensible folded proximal articles. A new species, Leontocaris alexander, is described from south-eastern Australia bringing the total number of species to eight. A phylogeny of the species demonstrates L. alexander is similar to L. paulsoni Stebbing, 1905 from South Africa and L. pacificus Zarenkov, 1976 from the south-eastern Pacific. With less confidence, L. amplectipes Bruce, 1990 and L. yarramundi Taylor & Poore, 1998 from south-eastern Australia and L. lar Kemp, 1906 from north-western Atlantic are similar, and L. bulga Taylor & Poore, 1998 from south-eastern Australia and L. vanderlandi Fransen, 2001 from the Indian Ocean are sister taxa. The phylogeny does not reflect geographic distribution.
