Abstract:

Description of a new, unpigmented and blind Asellid, belonging to the genus Proasellus. P. rouchi n. sp. is an interstitial form found in the underflow of Var River (Alpes-Maritimes, France). This Asellid shows morphological characters perfectly adapted to this biotope: very minute size, thin and elongated body, reduced chaetotaxy. The structure of the copulatory pleopods points out the fact that this hypogean Asellid takes place among the species of the cavaticus group. We give a check-list of the 8 species belonging to this phyletic line of Proasellus, a key to identify them and the distribution of each one. The biogeographical data permit to presume that these Asellids have an alpine origin and we propose a diagram showing their evolution from an hypothetical ancestral form.
