Abstract:
Slavery as an institution was not new and it prevailed in Ancient India. This article however aims to highlight the existence of 'Black slavery' in India. It tells that the negro a native of Africa was uprooted from his homeland and transplanted in India, a sub-continent of Asia. The Portuguese voyagers and Arab merchants were the chief shippers of Africans who they called slaves. The Diaspora of the African native took place and slaves were located in different parts of India. Goa even had a slave market in one of its streets called 'Rua Direita'. The Siddis also were of African origin, but all of them were not slaves; they held various positions as per their masters' liking and needs, and can be found in different places. As a result one notices the presence of the African native all over India.Document Type: Research article
