Abstract:Eulogizes Sydney J. Freedberg (1914–97), one of the “towering figures among Renaissance art historians of the modern era.” His five major books on Italian Renaissance painting are influential classics, though his contribution to the broader cultural life is not yet sufficiently valued. More than a scholar, more than an art historian, Freedberg was a great writer in the noble tradition of “literature” about art.
