Method and Meaning in an Altarpiece by Lorenzo Lotto

The full text article is not available.

The altarpiece Nicolo Bonafede commissioned Lorenzo Lotto to paint for the church of Santa Maria della Pietà in Monte San Giusto (c. 1529–1533) includes a portrait of the patron that emphasizes Bonafede's devotion to the theme of the Pietà and suggests a particularly close relationship with the sacred figures present at the Crucifixion. Other works by Lotto exhibit similar complicated depictions of personal and devotional relationships.
