Milton's Hymn of the Morning of Christ's Nativity can be divided into two sections, with an introduction, a transitional passage and a coda. This essay focuses on the first main section, showing how our appreciation of the poem can be enriched by an understanding of the musical traditions to which it relates, and then considers the ‘musica cattiva’ or hidden music of the second half of the poem.
