Reading Greek vases?

Abstract:
The suggestion that the inscriptions on Attic decorated vases were intended especially for symposia, to be read aloud and as a commentary on the scenes, is examined and found wanting in the face of the primary evidence about the vases, their inscriptions, and their possible purposes. Intentions and practices seem far more varied and often arbitrary.
