Abstract:

This article argues that the individual, as an actor with an identity over and above his or her membership in social groupings and cultural traditions, exists universally as an ontological reality. The recognition of this figure in anthropology is both an empirical and a moral necessity. The article gives the moniker `Anyone' to the transcendent individual figure. The course of the article, after the introduction of Anyone, is to survey the critiques that have appeared in social commentary of such a figure, critiques of cultural, institutional, realpolitische, and phenomenological kinds. The article offers arguments against these critiques so as to invest Anyone with an ontological and a moral existence that is anthropologically persuasive and accords to the ethnographic record. Anyone is the individual within the role-player, the actor who has the capacity to `pass' as member of any social grouping, any cultural tradition. There is an anthropological duty to conceive of ways in which Anyone can pass into social analysis and statecraft alike. Résumé

Le présent article avance que l'individu, en tant qu'acteur dont l'identité dépasse et transcende son appartenance à des groupements sociaux et à des traditions culturelles, a une existence universelle en tant que réalité ontologique. L'anthropologie a l'obligation, empirique aussi bien que morale, de reconnaître cette figure. L'article surnomme «Quiconque» la figure transcendante de l'individu. Après avoir présentéQuiconque, il examine les critiques de cette figure formulées dans le commentaire social, d'ordre culturel ou institutionnel, liées à la realpolitik ou phénoménologiques. L'auteur avance des arguments à l'encontre de ces critiques afin d'investir Quiconque d'une existence ontologique et morale qui soit persuasive du point de vue anthropologique et en accord avec les documents ethnographiques. Quiconque est l'individu au sein de celui qui joue un rôle, l'acteur qui peut « se faire passer » pour un membre de n'importe quel groupement social, de n'importe quelle tradition culturelle. Nous avons le devoir anthropologique d'imaginer les manières dont Quiconque peut passer dans l'analyse sociale et la structure de l'État.
