Summary.

The ecology, distribution and taxonomic history of the common English Bluebell, Hyacinthoides non-scripta (L.) Chouard ex Rothm. are described, and the relationship of Hyacinthoides to related genera is discussed. The wild species is illustrated and hybrid cultivated bluebells, H. × massartiana Geerinck, are also shown.
