Abstract:

Janice Wearmouth, lecturer in the School of Education at the Open University, interviewed a group of adult male prisoners in 1995 about their school experiences, as part of a wider study concerned with spoiled identity. One of them, Jack, had been classified as ‘maladjusted’ during the 1970s, and the interview with him provides powerful evidence of important definitional differences between his own perceptions of his abilities and the impressions of those who labelled him.
