Bureau International des Poids et Mesures
The Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) was established in 1875 as part of the Convention of the Metre, which is a diplomatic treaty providing the basis for international agreement on units of measurement. It has its headquarters near Paris, at the Pavillon de Breteuil in Sèvres, France, and is financed jointly by the Member States of the Convention.
The BIPM's mandate is to provide the basis for a single, coherent system of measurements throughout the world, traceable to the International System of Units (SI). This task takes many forms, from direct dissemination of units (as in the case of mass and time) to coordination through international comparisons of national measurement standards (as in length, electricity, radiometry and ionizing radiation).
The BIPM publishes a number of key titles, including the SI brochure and Metrologia, its international journal dealing with the scientific aspects of metrology. Metrologia has been running since 1965 and is available online back to 1995. Articles are available free of charge to subscribers and on a pay-per-view basis to all others.
