Extraction of ROI by using improved Mumford-Shah algorithm and its application to defect detection
Extraction of the regions of interest from an image is one of the most challenging tasks for many applications, in particular low-contrast images with little gradient such as radiological and medical images. In this paper, an improved piecewise-smooth Mumford-Shah algorithm is proposed for the extraction of regions of interest at different scale levels, in which the segmentation in any scale levels could be obtained by controlling the extensions of the two complementary functions u+ and u−. As distinct from the traditional implementation of the Mumford-Shah algorithm, a faster convergence speed can be obtained. The system has been tested on several radiological images with defects. The numerical experiment results have demonstrated that the proposed algorithm is prospective and effective for extracting defects from welding radiological images.
