Abstract:

This paper illustrates how an untapped form of oral tradition—ritual song— embodies the principles of ritual belief and the practice of daily activities that are at the heart of native cosmologies. The authors contend that understanding how these principles shape and direct a people's lifeway can assist the archaeologist in theory formation and data interpretation.
