Abstract:
This paper reports the results of a study of US academic research contributions to industry. Data from a 1997 mail survey of biology, chemistry and physics faculty provides information on the nature and contributions of industry-relevant, university-based research. A set of in-depth telephone interviews was conducted during the 19961998 time frame with both engineering and science faculty and their industrial counterparts that probed university research contributions to industry in more detail. Analyses of these and other data indicate that university-based research in engineering and science is often industry-relevant and real, tangible contributions are being made.Language: English
